How to Calculate Your Numerology Numbers: Step-by-Step Guide
Clear instructions and worked examples for every core number in Pythagorean numerology.
The Letter-Value Chart
For all name-based calculations, use this chart. Each letter is assigned a value from 1 to 9, cycling through the alphabet:
1
A, J, S
2
B, K, T
3
C, L, U
4
D, M, V
5
E, N, W
6
F, O, X
7
G, P, Y
8
H, Q, Z
9
I, R
1. Life Path Number
Your Life Path is the most important number in your numerological profile. It's derived from your complete date of birth.
Steps:
- Reduce your birth month to a single digit
- Reduce your birth day to a single digit
- Reduce your birth year to a single digit
- Add the three results together
- Reduce the sum to a single digit (unless it's 11, 22, or 33)
Worked example: July 20, 1985
- Month: July = 7 → 7
- Day: 20 → 2 + 0 = 2
- Year: 1985 → 1 + 9 + 8 + 5 = 23 → 2 + 3 = 5
- Sum: 7 + 2 + 5 = 14 → 1 + 4 = 5
Life Path Number = 5
2. Destiny Number (Expression Number)
Your Destiny Number reveals your natural talents and what you're equipped to achieve. It's calculated from your full name at birth.
Steps:
- Write out your full name exactly as it appears on your birth certificate
- Look up each letter's value on the chart above
- Add all the values together
- Reduce the total to a single digit (unless it's 11, 22, or 33)
Worked example: "Mary Anne Smith"
- Mary: 4 + 1 + 9 + 7 = 21 → 2 + 1 = 3
- Anne: 1 + 5 + 5 + 5 = 16 → 1 + 6 = 7
- Smith: 1 + 4 + 9 + 2 + 8 = 24 → 2 + 4 = 6
- Sum: 3 + 7 + 6 = 16 → 1 + 6 = 7
Destiny Number = 7
3. Soul Urge Number (Heart's Desire)
Your Soul Urge reveals your inner motivations — what you truly want at the deepest level. It's calculated using only the vowels in your full name.
Steps:
- Identify the vowels in your full name (A, E, I, O, U — and sometimes Y when it sounds like a vowel)
- Look up each vowel's value on the chart
- Add all the vowel values together
- Reduce to a single digit (unless it's 11, 22, or 33)
Worked example: "Mary Anne Smith"
- Vowels: A (1), A (1), E (5), I (9)
- Sum: 1 + 1 + 5 + 9 = 16 → 1 + 6 = 7
Soul Urge Number = 7
4. Personality Number
Your Personality Number reveals how others perceive you — the impression you make on the world. It's calculated using only the consonants in your full name.
Steps:
- Identify the consonants in your full name (all letters that aren't A, E, I, O, U)
- Look up each consonant's value on the chart
- Add all the consonant values together
- Reduce to a single digit (unless it's 11, 22, or 33)
Worked example: "Mary Anne Smith"
- Consonants: M (4), R (9), Y (7), N (5), N (5), S (1), M (4), T (2), H (8)
- Sum: 4 + 9 + 7 + 5 + 5 + 1 + 4 + 2 + 8 = 45 → 4 + 5 = 9
Personality Number = 9
5. Birthday Number
Your Birthday Number is the simplest to calculate — it's the day of the month you were born, reduced to a single digit unless it's a master number.
Steps:
- Take the day of the month you were born (1–31)
- Reduce to a single digit (unless it's 11, 22, or 33)
Examples:
- Born on the 5th → Birthday Number = 5
- Born on the 22nd → Birthday Number = 22 (master number — don't reduce!)
- Born on the 28th → 2 + 8 = 10 → 1 + 0 = 1
Common Mistakes People Make
- Reducing master numbers. If your total comes to 11, 22, or 33, don't reduce it further. These are kept as master numbers. For example, if your Life Path sum is 29, that's 2 + 9 = 11 — and 11 stays as 11, not 2.
- Reducing the entire date at once. For the Life Path, reduce the month, day, and year separately before adding them together. Don't just add all the digits of the full date in one step. (Though both methods often give the same result, they can differ for master numbers.)
- Using a married name or nickname. The Destiny, Soul Urge, and Personality numbers use your full name at birth — the name on your birth certificate. Married names, nicknames, and shortened names aren't used for these core calculations.
- Counting Y as a vowel inconsistently. In Pythagorean numerology, Y is typically treated as a consonant. Some practitioners count it as a vowel when it sounds like one (as in "Mary"), but for consistency, we treat it as a consonant on this site.
- Forgetting to reduce twice. Some numbers need two rounds of reduction. For example, 38 → 3 + 8 = 11 (master number, stop here). But 47 → 4 + 7 = 11 → stop. And 57 → 5 + 7 = 12 → 1 + 2 = 3.
